Yellow Garden by the Fence

Yellow garden by the fence, oil on canvas painting of flowers in a backyard garden

Oil on canvas, 16 x 20, $375

This painting comes from another corner of my wife’s backyard garden, where a mass of yellow flowers rises against the weathered fence. She is an expert gardener, and scenes like this are the result of years of knowledge, patience, and careful attention.

What caught my eye here was the natural composition: tall yellow blooms lifting upward, echoed by lower bands of lighter flowers, all set against the muted vertical rhythm of the fence. The contrast between the bright yellows and the darker ground creates a quiet structure that felt complete without embellishment.

As with many of these garden paintings, the subject is less about individual plants than about the way color, growth, and time organize themselves when they’re allowed to do what they do best. This piece is part of my ongoing effort to document these gardens for posterity, preserving moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
