I have painted the pond at Miller Woods several times. It is one of those places that keeps changing—not dramatically, but with the light, the season, and the growth along the water.
Here, a single Canada goose was enough to give me a reason to paint it again. I was interested in the smallness of the bird against all that green—the reeds and bright grasses at the far bank, and especially the broad, quiet surface of the pond.
I had intended to do more with the foreground. Then I stopped. Sometimes a large area of paint can say more when it is allowed to remain just that: color, surface, and suggestion.
