Most visitors to Astoria look north toward the Columbia River and the bridge. I looked the other way. From high above the town, I was attracted to the broad sweep of sky and the fields and trees stretching into the distance. What interested me most, though, was the river, barely visible as it winds through the landscape toward the viewer. I resisted making it more obvious. Sometimes what is only partly seen is what makes a landscape worth painting.
